Scientific paper contribution: Degrowth as an option in Croatia
The paper is co-authored by MPhil Tomislav Tomasevic
Abstract: This contribution is a part of Degrowth in post-socialist European Countries Special Session. It outlines the development path Croatia has pursued (that has not produced desirable results) and will argue that the country should pursue sustainable degrowth. We identify potentials Croatia has in ecological agriculture, utilisation of forests as well as other potentials in renewable energy production. But we question the prevailing model when it comes to dominant governance structures. One should insist on greater self-sufficiency and localisation in production of food and energy where suitable while bigger centralised production systems are justified only where technological optimum or economies of scale demand it. In order to achieve sustainable transformation it is not just what and how much we produce that has to change but also how. Degrowth strategy in Croatia has to be followed by greater participation and democratisation in production and consumption process within the framework of commons which goes both for smaller and bigger production systems. Keywords: degrowth, Croatia.
