Exploring transformation to a radical alternative society (RAGE)

The crisis in the current political economy is commonly recognised as involving social ecological and economic components. However, there is much divergence as to which elements are key to address and to what extent they can be addressed without radical change. Degrowth generally proposes radical change but without clarity as to the values and ethics involved, what political system would be necessary or feasible, what should change and how, and whom is responsible for making the change. This is the transformation agenda we wish to explore in this session. We use the term transformation as indicating a major and substantive re-formation of structure and conduct in society, rather than a transit to an slightly different order (i.e. transition).
All papers in the first part of the RAGE special session will be 10 minutes and presented in the first hour of the session. They are split between two introductory talks (Panos Petridis, Potentials of the degrowth debate for social ecological transformation; Christian Kerschner and Clive Spash, A social ecological economics perspective on transformation) and four topic based presentations (Petra Wächter, Components of the energy system for a degrowth transformation; Wolfgang Fellner, Time use in an alternative degrowth society; Clive Spash, Values and ethics in an alternative degrowth society; Ulrich Brand, Degrowth politics, transformation possibilities and barriers). These presentations are meant to guide the discussion of the second half that will allow an hour for breakout groups and feedback. These groups will pursue specific questions about transformation.
